Distance is 13 miles (21 km); total climb is 650 feet (198 m); terrain is gentle; surfaces are mainly walked earth paths, grass and well made tracks.

We begin this walk with a gentle ramble down the old Roman Road, Fosse Way, fosse meaning ditch, the route ran along what was probably an early frontier between Lincoln and either Axminster or Exeter after the Roman invasion of AD43.   We goes as far as High Cross the point where two major Roman roads, the Fosse Way and Watling Street, cross.   It was the site of a Romano-British settlement known as Venonae or Venonis, with a nearby fort.

It is about a mile west of the village of Claybrooke Parva, our next destination following the well way marked Leicestershire Round, passed through on route to Ullesthorpe (our lunch stop).

After lunch we'll head south to the small hamlet of Willey, the afternoon walk back is more peaceful Leicestershire countryside.
